THE
ONE MINUTE ACTIVIST:Take a Minute, Make a Difference
1. Elect to End Torture: Sign the
Petition Today
Join these 29,190 other Americans for Human Rights and
stand against torture.
Count me in! I want a U.S. President who will not allow
torture to happen again in America’s name. All U.S. personnel must uphold the
absolute ban on torture and cruel treatment with no exceptions. I do not
tolerate "outsourcing" torture or holding prisoners in secret.
Once you sign, we will keep you posted about the range
of ways you can "Elect to End Torture" throughout the 2008 presidential
campaign.
Click here to read the petition letter that will be
presented to the presidential candidates along with your names.
2. Tell Your Senators: Support Filibuster,
Don't Let Lawbreakers off the Hook
There are increased and vocal objections in Congress
and in the press to any FISA bill that lets lawbreakers off the hook. And
now, Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) has made it clear that all it takes to stop
assaults on the Constitution is the political will to act.
The possibility of a filibuster means that every single
Senator now has a choice to make: give in to White House pressure by
giving immunity to telecommunications companies and allowing wiretapping of
Americans without any real check, or, stand up for the Constitution and the rule
of law.
Tell your senators to protect the Constitution and the
rule of law. Simply fill in your information below to send an instant letter to
your senators.
3. Tell Your Senators: Don't Cave on the
Energy Bill
According to our sources, the leaders in the Senate are
negotiating a compromise energy bill. This compromise would sell out clean
energy for wind and solar and include huge subsidies for ethanol and nuclear
power. In exchange, we would get the promise of modest increases in automobile
fuel efficiency standards, if environmentalists in the Senate can get a majority
to stand up and hold the line.
This is unacceptable. And given the Senate's track
record in the last few weeks, we have little confidence that the leadership will
not cave to the Bush administration yet again.
Tell your senators (and we'll send a cc fax to Senate
Majority Leader Harry.
4. Please urge your Senators and
Representatives to support the Senate-passed provision on Iraqi refugees that is
part of the Defense Authorization bill.
Protect and Assist Iraqi Refugees
Dear [ Decision Maker ]
The Iraqi refugee crisis is the greatest human
displacement crisis in the Middle East in almost 60 years. The U.S. response to
the crisis has been insufficient to meet the needs of the two million displaced
inside Iraq and the two million Iraqi refugees in neighboring countries.
The U.S. must develop a comprehensive assistance plan
including:
-- A humanitarian aid package that provides shelter,
health care, food, schooling, and helps protect refugees and the internally
displaced.
-- Sufficient support to resettle additional Iraq
refugees in the U.S. Priority should be given to the most vulnerable - those who
worked for Americans, are persecuted minorities, or have close family in the
U.S.
-- Special immigrant visas and other measures to allow
vulnerable Iraqis (like unaccompanied children) to come to the U.S.
The Senate recently took a significant step toward
achieving these goals through approval of the "Refugee Crisis in Iraq Act" as an
amendment to the Defense Authorization bill that passed the Senate on October
1.
As a U.S. citizen, I urge you to take prompt action on
this and other legislation that helps uprooted Iraqis whose lives are at risk,
in many cases because of their support to the U.S. in Iraq, and provide
increased aid in the near future.
5. Call for President Bush to ensure that no
US weapons are used in Pakistani Crackdown
We need your help in asking President Bush to ensure
that no weapons provided to Pakistan by the United States are used to commit
human rights violations against peaceful demonstrators in the country. In
addition, the United States need to publicly demand the immediate and
unconditional release of all peaceful demonstrators being detained in Pakistan.
The situation in Pakistan is deteriorating, as hundred have been arrested and
arbitrarily detained across Pakistan. They include lawyers, journalists, human
rights defenders, and political activists. Several Supreme Court Justices were
sacked, including the chief justice, and placed under house arrest. The time to
take action is now, as every day counts! It is crucial that the United States
mobilizes and puts pressure on Pakistan before it is too late.
Recent Petitions (There's
still time to sign!)
Stop Comcast. Save Net Neutrality.
An investigation by the Associated Press caught Comcast
secretly inspecting online communications and crippling users' ability to share
information with one another.
This is a gross violation of Net Neutrality -- the
longstanding principle that ensures a free and open Internet. Free Press has
filed a legal complaint demanding that the FCC take action to protect the
Internet's free flow of information. By sending the letter you join the fight to
stop Comcast and other gatekeepers.
Send your letter to the FCC telling them to
protect Net Neutrality.
Protect Alaskan Wilderness from Oil and Gas
Drilling!
The Bush Administration wants to sacrifice one of the
world's most important ecosystems in Arctic Alaska to the oil industry. We need
your help to stop it.
A million birds, more than 45,000 caribou (and other
mammals), and seven Alaska Native communities depend on the unparalleled
resources of the Teshekpuk Lake region.
Ninety percent of the region where the lake is located
is already open to oil and gas development. This internationally-renowned
ecosystem and the remarkable wildlife that inhabits it deserve protection.
Please tell the Bureau of Land Management: "Not
on my watch. This is a sacrifice America must not make."
Ask Your Senators to Strengthen Promising New
Climate Bill
Over the last year, Union of Concerned Scientists
supporters across the country have sent thousands of letters to state and
federal lawmakers urging them to reduce global warming pollution. While we've
laid important groundwork and celebrated some concrete victories at the state
and regional level—the United States still needs national comprehensive climate
legislation.
Soon, Congress will be consumed with 2008 presidential
election activity. We need a strong policy that helps prevent dangerous warming.
We have a small window of opportunity—and we must act now.
Last week, Senators Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) and John
Warner (R-VA) introduced America’s Climate Security Act (S. 2191). The bill’s
bi-partisan support and strong framework for reducing global warming pollution
will help build momentum for real congressional action. However, the Senate must
act to strengthen a few elements of the bill. Please urge your senators to
ensure that the bill helps avoid the worst effects of global warming.
Stop nuclear handouts
Congress is set to pass the energy bill this Fall.
We'll get more solar and wind and even better fuel efficiency for our cars.
There's just one thing: one line in the new energy bill provides up to $50
billion for the nuclear industry.
We've already got the safe, viable alternatives to
replace the dirty energy we're using now. Building new atomic reactors in an age
of terror threats is not only scary, but the toxic waste from nuclear power
threatens our health and our planet.
Please sign the petition, watch the video, and pass it
along to friends.
Demand Healthy Food for Yourself and the
Environment
Every five years Congress makes decisions about how our
food will be produced when they vote on the Food and Farm Bill. We all want
healthy, tasty food, but the Food and Farm Bill should also support modern
farming practices that protect the foundations of our food supply, like healthy
soil and a fresh water supply. At the same time, government policy should
address the effects that some farm practices have on our health, such as
antibiotic resistance caused by adding these important drugs to the feed of
animals that are not sick. Over the next few days, the Senate will debate this
critical legislation that could drastically affect the future of our food
supply. This is your chance to demand federal agricultural programs that are
better for you and our planet. Please write to your senator today!
Help Chris Dodd Hold the Wiretap Immunity
Bill
After passionate lobbying by the Netroots. Senator
Chris Dodd took heroic action by putting the wiretap immunity bill on hold.
Hooray!!!!!! First, let's thank Senator Dodd.
Second, we need all of the progressive Senators to join
Senator Dodd's hold, because the pressure on him to surrender to Bush and the
telecom giants will be huge.
We'll send this petition to these Senators
through their national PACs, which are always eager to get our money - now is
the time for them to earn it!
Tell Congress to Stop Big Media
Kevin Martin, Chairman of the Federal Communications
Commission, has been keeping a secret from the American people. He wants to push
through plans to remove decades-old media ownership protections. And he's trying
to do it without public scrutiny.
The FCC has a long history of making decisions
behind closed doors. It's time the public made the FCC accountable. Sign this
letter and urge Congress to convene oversight hearings
immediately.
Letters like this -- millions of them -- stopped media
consolidation in 2003. Sign the letter and tell everyone you know.
This fall, Congress can flip the switch and
bring America's clean energy future to life.
Question is -- are your representatives in
Congress blocking or supporting increasing the fuel economy of our cars and
using more renewable energy to produce electricity?
Can they be counted on to make our cars go
farther on a gallon of gas and to insist that renewable energy sources like wind
and solar power generate 15 percent of our electricity?
How Did Your Congressional Members Vote?

Senators and Representative accountable.

New Rulers of the World
A documentary film by John Pilger
'Global economy' is a modern Orwellian term. On the
surface, it is instant financial trading, mobile phones, McDonald's, Starbucks,
holidays booked on the net. Beneath this gloss, it is the globalisation of
poverty, a world where most human beings never make a phone call and live on
less than two dollars a day, where 6,000 children die every day from diarrhea
because most have no access to clean water.
